Ohio Trucking Safety Council - May Program

Thursday, May 9, 2024 (11:30 AM - 1:30 PM) (EDT)

Description

Commercial Driver Safety: What does recent research tell us about driver risk?

In 2021 alone, over 5,100 fatal crashes involved a large truck, resulting in nearly 5,800 fatalities.(1) These fatalities included more than 1,000 large truck occupant fatalities. (1) That same year, the rate of large truck-involved fatal crashes per 100 million vehicle miles traveled was the highest it’s been since 2007. Driver risk is a factor of numerous variables. Recent commercial driving research studies conducted by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute have examined driver risk as a factor of driver distraction, driver age and experience, driver medical examination certification length, and driver medical conditions and condition treatment.

Join us for the May OTSC meeting when Susan Soccolich, with the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute’s (VTTI) Division of Freight, Transit, and Heavy Vehicle Safety, will share the top findings about commercial driver safety - including which driver distraction tasks continue to be high risk.

About the Speaker:
Susan Soccolich is a Senior Research Associate with the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute’s (VTTI) Division of Freight, Transit, and Heavy Vehicle Safety. She has over 13 years of research experience examining a range of driver and driving-related health and safety topics through survey-based studies, assessments of large driving safety-based databases, and naturalistic driving studies. She has contributed significantly to studies sponsored by both public and private sponsors, including research on driving regulations; distraction behaviors in drivers of heavy trucks, buses, and light vehicles; driver fatigue and drowsiness; the prevalence, risk, and treatment of sleep apnea; commercial driver detention; and the impact of advanced vehicle technologies on driver safety. She has spoken at forums, with carrier representatives, and on radio on the importance of reducing driver distraction.
